Mission & History

DeKalb Rape Crisis Center (DRCC) provides direct services, prevention education, and advocacy for youth and adult survivors of sexual assault, their families and the community as a whole.  DRCC helps survivors of sexual violence forge a new beginning, not only to survive their ordeal, but also to become strengthened by it.  DRCC is the only agency in DeKalb County offering these services.

DRCC:
* assists survivors of sexual assault and the community in coping with these crimes
* helps medical personnel in the delivery of health care to survivors
* provides counseling for the emotional trauma experienced by a sexual assault survivor
* helps survivors negotiate the criminal justice system
* educates the general public on sexual assault crimes and their prevention

Rape hurts. Not only bodies and psyches, but pocket books too. It overwhelms an already crippled health care system with ongoing costs of physical and mental healing and affects the bottom lines of corporations through productivity loss.
In fact, rape costs society more than any other crime including murder. According to a National Institute of Justice estimate, rape and other adult sexual assaults cause an annual minimum loss of $127 billion dollars, or about $508 per U.S. resident. That figure includes both the tangible and intangible losses such as property damage or loss and pain and suffering, but does not include the cost of investigation, prosecution or incarceration of offenders.

For the past 20 years, armed with a small staff and many dedicated volunteers, the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center (DRCC) has worked to combat the devastating impact that rape has on victims, their spouses, family members, and neighbors. Click on the Word document at left to read the full article.
