Who We Are
Our Mission
DeKalb Rape Crisis Center exists to assist victims of sexual assault and the community in coping with these crimes; to help medical personnel in the delivery of health care needed as a result of these crimes; to provide counseling toward healing the emotional trauma experienced by a victim of sexual assault; to help victims through the investigation and court stages of the resolution of these crimes; and to educate the general public on sexual assault crimes and their prevention.
History of the DRCC
DeKalb Rape Crisis Center (DRCC) was adopted as a project of the Junior League of DeKalb County, Inc. in 1988, at the recommendation of a task force appointed by the Decatur Cooperative Ministry. It was found that there was no treatment facility in this community for sexual assault survivors. Research showed that Grady Memorial Hospital, the nearest center, saw more than 1,200 sexual assault survivors each year, 20% (or 240) of whom were from DeKalb County.
A committee from the League studied rape services across the United States and adopted a plan for a center to suit the unique needs of DeKalb County. In August 1989, a project coordinator was hired. The following October, the first class of 50 volunteers was trained. On October 30, 1989, the crisis line officially opened with two counselors on duty 24 hours each day to provide crisis intervention and referral services. Since that day, our community volunteers have given more than 17,000 hours of service to more than 300 sexual assault survivors each year. More than 1,000 hours of service have been given by volunteers working in the DRCC office and on special projects. Currently, DRCC has nearly 130 active volunteers and a staff of ten.
In 1993, the Center achieved its plan for independence from the original sponsor and incorporated as a nonprofit agency with a community board of directors. In 2002 a permanent home was purchased for the Center providing a place for the services and programs to grow.
